Joseph Cianciulli earned University degrees from Temple University Boyer school of music and University of Louisville in both voice performance and concert piano. Following this University study, Joseph embarked on a ten year study of vocal pedagogy and Bel Canto lineage documentation under vocal master, Daniel E. Montes. In addition, Mr. Cianciulli completed his certification in Speech Language Pathology from West Chester University and has earned specialized training in vocal rehabilitation. Joseph is a lineage voice builder from the Lehmann, Garcia, Stuart, Modesti, Lamperti and Wilcox school of voice. Mr. Cianciulli looks forward to helping cultivate a new generation of singers with a true Bel Canto resonance. The teachers of old believed that every singer has his or her own unique resonance that differentiates their vocal quality from others of similar quality. We seek to encourage and support each student as they begin the journey to find their own unique resonance with the help of our program!
Voice building, unlike voice teaching or voice coaching, is a nearly forgotten concept in todays artistic community. Where most voice teachers use nearly the same generic exercises with singers of both genders, voice builders understood that vowel and consonant combinations are endowed with the ability to influence growth and change in the voice when used correctly. This approach requires that the instructor has a carefully trained ear to both identify and build appoggiare in the voice, an in-depth knowledge of anatomy and also the ability to know when to implement certain vowel and consonant combinations in order to build a voice that can withstand a dynamic operatic career that spans a singers entire life! Completely separate from the voice builder and vocal instructor is the voice coach who is expected to have a mastery of language (including dialect), style and the ability to accompany a singer on their repertoire. The vocal coach does not typically have knowledge of the building of a classical resonance and, even if they do, does not fit the old world requirement of a voice builder to both teach a classical technique AND portray the technique in his/her own voice. The process to become a voice builder is as follows; The student aspiring to become a builder of voices must first spend 4-6 years taking consistent vocal lessons from a lineaged voice builder in order to produce a classical resonance; the student must then sit behind their teacher for 2-4 years in order to understand why and when his/her voice builder uses certain exercises and, more importantly, what they hear that encourages them to implement vowel and consonant combinations; Finally the teacher observes the student teaching his/her students for 2-4 years to be sure the technique is being implemented in the correct way. This was the way in which vocal lineages were preserved and “indestructible” voices of the past were created. This, unfortunately, is nearly lost in our society today. The vast majority of teachers at the University and professional level have not participated in this process to offer a true Bel Canto technique to students leaving them, many times, with more questions than answers.. Mr. Cianciulli offers the opportunity to work with a voice builder having specialized training as an accompanist and vocal rehabilitation specialist. Call now to have any questions answered!
